Bridgwater, Somerset West and Sedgemoor is a sprawling Constituency over 60 miles long and at least 500 square miles. The map below just gives you a very rough idea of the shape of the place - Exmoor to the west, the lowlands of Sedgemoor to the east. It is, like most Parliamentary constituencies, an artificial grouping of different towns and villages in order that around 70,000 constituents should be represented by a single MP. The big towns are Bridgwater and Minehead. The tiny towns and picturesque villages are far too numerous to put on a map of this size. And the constituency has just grown a little bit bigger, taking in additional parts of Exmoor like Dulverton. If you click the map immediately below it links through to Ordnance Survey's detailed mapping service to enable you to find specific places. (There is only one small problem, you can't get back to this page! A minor glitch, I'm sure,. Those charming people at Ordnance Survey are working on it)
How to get here? And what will you find when you arrive? The M5 gets you close. Taking the train is a pain, because Minehead cannot be reached by normal passenger rail and Bridgwater itself is only on a branch line from Bristol......so go London-to-Bristol fast and Bristol-to-Bridgwater at a gentle pace! Alternatively try London-to-Taunton and then chug back up on the branchline, or take a bus.
Once upon a time there was a wonderful rail network that criss-crossed the whole area, then Dr Beeching got rid of it. But if you get to the coast and you can catch the wonderful West Somerset Railway - painstakingly restored, used by almost 250,000 happy passengers every year and maintained by dedicated local enthusiasts.
